Affordable Luxuries

Times are hard for lots of people at the moment, including us and with Christmas coming we are trying to tighten our belts even more.

But one of the things that keep us going during these dark long Autumn nights are what I class as out affordable luxuries and for MadDad that is good coffee and for me a great cup of tea.

I have never really been a coffee drinker, but I certainly am married to one and when I was invited to Taylors of Harrogate for a coffee masterclass I thought about not going, but then decided that I would go and find out what makes a great coffee so I could impress my fella.

I have to say I had a brilliant time.  I loved the presentations by Emily.  You could really tell that she loved her job and was passionate about coffee and spreading the message to us all.  She took away all the mystique of coffee for me and made it very accessible.

Even better she introduced me to the fab coffee selection boxes that Taylors produce.  They each contain 4 sachets of different coffees in the perfect amount for an 8 cup cafetiere   This has allowed both me and MadDad to choose our favorite coffee without any waste and share a coffee together each Sunday.

So as a new found coffee girl, I wanted to share with you my top tips as picked up at Taylors:

  • You need 45g of coffee for an 8 cup cafetiere
  • Use fresh water in the kettle and allow it to boil and settle before filling the cafetiere
  • Stir and let the coffee brew for 3 to 5 minutes
  • Always taste the coffee before adding milk and sugar to taste
  • Ground coffee lasts 1 week in the fridge when open or 2 weeks in the freezer and you can use it straight from the freezer
What are your affordable luxuries?

  1. Do you know, I kind of dismissed the idea of luxury because I have two small children, but I think that a little bit of well presented luxury would be a really good thing for both me and Hubby. I like a soak in the bath on a Sunday evening with a glass of wine and a book - maybe I should make that time even more special with a "nice" as oppose to a "cheap" bubble bath. And the occasional really well presented Sushi would make Hubby feel pampered.
